Ocean Freight

There are various types of road and air freight transportation, especially ocean freight transportation, which is preferred for transporting goods and various cargoes. Each type of transport has advantages and disadvantages in such matters as cost, time, procedures and load limits. For example, ocean transportation is the most advantageous type of transportation when it comes to cost. As the name suggests, it takes place on the sea route and is extremely suitable for export/import. It allows different sizes and a large number of loads to be transported at one time. You can send pallets, containers and bulk cargo by sea. If you do not have enough products to fill a container filled with sea transportation (FCL) or a container, you can ship your goods using part of the container (LCL). All transport-related transactions are carried out by the freight forwarder company when it comes to transporting goods from point A to point B, and the entire process is managed on your behalf.

What is Ocean Freight?

Ocean freight transport is usually a form of transportation of large and heavy loads by sea. It is one of the most common modes of transport, and more than 80% of all products traded worldwide are transported this way. The goods are usually loaded onto ships located in ports around the world, and the ships have large metal shipping containers for transportation. Container transportation by sea plays an active and important role in the supply chain, from the transportation of large quantities of CPGs (consumer packaged goods) to the transportation of vehicles and electronic goods. For this reason, a transport bill of lading is issued containing the type of goods, weight and much more information (bill of lading). Then, the transportation is completed smoothly in exchange for the freight fee.

Most ocean transport is done by container ships, which can carry more than 18,000 containers. There are two most common container sizes, 33 cubic meters TEUs and 66 cubic meters TEUs. Cargo ships are also used to transport goods that cannot fit in containers, such as large quantities of chemicals and large equipment. Tanker ship is used for chemicals, dry cargo ship is used for other goods.

Ocean transportation is usually the most cost-effective, but relatively longer-lasting mode of transportation for transporting large quantities of products over long distances. Small shipments in large quantities are often combined into a single container to achieve the cheapest shipping rate. Ocean transportation is the most cost-effective way to transport important shipments in terms of size and volume, especially those weighing more than 500 kg. While ocean transportation takes an average of 18-60 days, air transportation is a much faster alternative, but it can be extremely expensive, especially for heavy items.

Types of Ocean Freight Transport

In general, there are two types of shipping in ocean transportation. Tramp shipping is a type of transportation in which goods of different companies are located and products such as coal, mines and wood are transported in a general sense, the arrival time of which is not determined. In liner shipping, the appropriate ship is usually selected according to the cargo, and the type of ship also determines the type of ocean freight transportation. Within this scope, liner shipping types are divided into five as tanker, Ro-Ro, combined, container and bulk cargo transportation. These can be explained as follows:
  • Tanker transportation: It is preferred for the transportation of gas or chemical substances.
  • Ro-Ro transportation: Cargoes are loaded and transported by vehicles such as trucks coming to the ships via land and trucks.
  • Container transportation: The most commonly used is container transportation. When it comes to imports and exports, almost all types of goods are transported in this way.
  • Combined transportation: Oil can also be transported in the preferred combined transportation for dry cargo.
  • Bulk cargo transportation: It is the way of transporting products such as cement, gravel, sand, salt, sugar that cannot be calculated numerically.

Advantages of Ocean Freight Transport

Ocean freight transport is a form of transportation that provides advantages in many ways. The main advantage for most companies is that ocean freight transport is cheaper than, for example, air freight transport or road freight transport. Because the costs are lower, so you can transport products to the other side of the world for a lower fee. But this is not the only advantage. Here are the other advantages you can get with ocean freight transportation:
  • Ocean freight transport is an efficient mode of transportation in terms of both the size and volume of the shipment. Whether it is a small product or a bulky product shipment, containers are suitable for all commercial needs. It is also known for being efficient in terms of international shipping prices.
  • Ocean freight transportation also offers supply chain leaders more flexibility with fewer restrictions than other modes of transportation. Transport safety restrictions vary according to international and national laws, individual carrier regulations and carrier organization regulations. For example, some goods require more security measures, while others cannot be transported outside the sea route. Due to these regulations, many products are not suitable for air freight transport. This makes ocean freight transport a reliable alternative for companies in various sectors.
  • Ocean transportation enables the transportation of everything from beauty products such as perfumes and hairspray to everyday consumer goods such as cleaning supplies and light bulbs, as well as consumer electronics such as smartphones.
  • CO2 emissions are much lower in ocean transportation compared to land or air transportation.
  • Another good advantage of ocean transportation is that the arrival times are very predictable. This way, you will know exactly when the cargo will arrive and when you can pick up the goods.

What are LCL and FCL?

Ocean freight transport is, first of all, an environmentally friendly method of transportation. In addition, when it comes to partial loading, options are offered according to the volume of the goods. After all, large quantities of cargo can be transported in spacious sea containers. Shipping your sea cargo by container can be done in various ways, such as transporting per full container load (FCL) or less than container load (LCL). The size of the cargo determines whether your shipment will be shipped in consolidated or separate containers.
  • FCL: If the goods that need to be transported fill a full container, one-time and one-piece shipment is provided. Ocean freight transport with sea containers of 20 or 40 is called full container load, that is, full container load (FCL).
  • LCL: If your cargo is not large enough to fill an entire container, it will be cheaper to use a certain part of a container to transport your sea cargo. In this case, the freight is consolidated with other shipments with the same destination. This way you can pay not for the entire container, but only for the part you use. Transportation in this way is also called combined container transportation, i.e. less then container load (LCL).
